How do I stay motivated?
‘Every accomplishment starts with the decision to try’
Is it something as simple as a saying that can keep you motivated? Or do you need much more than that?
For each of us, what drives us can be very different things. There are some people who need very little push or encouragement to get themselves going and keep going. For other’s it can be a constant battle in your mind.
Motivation is literally the desire to do things. We all know if we are interested and engaged in something, we are far more motivated to continue to do it. But how do you work out what will help you stick at it!
At some point we find it becomes easier to change than stay the same. We get that little buzz when we accomplish the task we set out to do. We reach that point where something becomes habit and we no longer have to think twice about doing it.
“Of course motivation is not permanent. But then, neither is bathing; but it is something you should do on a regular basis.”
― Zig Ziglar, Raising Positive Kids in a Negative World
While some tasks will turn into habits, that’s not to say every day you will want to jump out of bed to get it done. Different days present different challenges to us all. You may have only got 6 hours sleep last night so that 5km run feels like 10kms.
Motivation will ebb and flow. On a good day we can take on the world but on a bad day we need to push that little bit harder. Finding ways to get through these hard days can be very individual.
Sit down with a pen and paper and have an honest discussion with yourself – note you may want to keep the conversation in your head so not to give the people around you the idea that you have started talking to yourself!!
Think about how you operate. What are some things you react too and what is your reaction? What do you love to do or what can see yourself doing every day? If the thought of getting on a bike turns your insides out, then perhaps don’t take up bike riding. What is something you would love to achieve? What is realistic for you to achieve? You might not have a lot of free time so to suddenly decide to train for a marathon may not be an option. That’s not to say you can’t make it happen, but you would possibly have to changeyour priorities to be able to schedule in long training runs.
At the end of the day, no one can motivate anyone to do anything however ……. If you are willing to get outside your comfort zone, allow yourself to make mistakes and keep moving forward, you just might surprise yourself and suddenly be doing things you never thought possible.
Charles Dubois once said, “We must be prepared, at any moment, to sacrifice who we are for who we are capable of becoming.”
